This video came out right around the time I began to realize everything RZA touched turned to gold. And between the years of 1993-1996 it was hard to argue with that statement. This video is one of my favorites from the 'Golden Era' of hip-hop (actually, all genres, come to think of it) music videos, basically the first eight or nine years of the 90's. The Speed Racer concept is something that you normally wouldn't associate with hip-hop, let alone from a bunch of hard ass dudes from the Staten Island projects. But by this time (1995) it was plainly obvious Wu-Tang was far away from running short on creativity.
Lucky for me, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Raekwon and the rest will be at the Rock the Bells Festival this weekend at the Hyundai Pavillion in San Bernardino, CA. Not only will I be watching one of the most prolific hip-hop groups ever, but there are at least 15 other acts that I am genuinely excited to see, including Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy, the Roots, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch and MF Doom! Be on the lookout for a full recap later this week.
